Five Week 1 DVOA Stats That Caught My Eye
(A look inside the FTN Paywall, kind-of sort-of)
As a big fan of DVOA, it is my job to tell you that you can have access to all this data and more at FTN Fantasy this year. Some of it is free, some of it is behind a paywall. Tell ‘em Rivers sent you! They won’t actually do anything for you or me because of that, but it’ll make me feel like I drove you to the right place.
1) The average quarterback’s short pass percentage was 83% in Week 1. In 2023, it was 81%. The average quarterback’s deep pass DVOA in 2023 was 63.3%. The average quarterback’s deep DVOA in 2024 is 74.7%.
The war on deep passing has been happening for some time. It’s not a revelation to bring this up. But it is interesting that for all the hemming (from lemmings) about Week 1’s dastardly passing stats that it actually doesn’t amount to much of an overall change. Much of the difference in fact is in teams creating an even lower DVOA on short passes than they did in 2023 (9.7% to 2023’s 12.0%).
